In 1987 Mikhail Savitsky started his new project, devoted to the tragedy of Chernobyl. His goal was to remove a privacy veil over consequences of Chernobyl and draw people’s attention to the drama of the XX century.

Savitsky spent 5 difficult years working on this series. Chernobyl is not just a disaster for him, it is Apocalypse. The disaster can be liquidated, but not a world catastrophe. From the artist’s point of view, Chernobyl disaster was inevitable. It reflects all troubles of human self-confident and thoughtless activity, which has led to the tragical alienation from earth, nature, from a habitual way of life, from morals, at last.

Mikhail Savitsky was the first artist engaged in representation of the Chernobyl tragedy. He had to find new ways in order to express the universal grief. The artist excluded the method of “the reporting from an event place”, but decided to show the “plots” from realities of Chernobyl inhabitants, having given to the majority of these plots allegorical sense/

However, the series “Chernobyl” was created not only in grief. It is created for the sake of a victory over human humiliation and lie. The goal of the series is to make everyone to shudder from what has been done and to believe in reason, responsibility and mercy.
